It looks like a new project is starting in the Jackrabbit community's sandbox area to build a CMIS implementation on top of the JCR API.  It sounds like the goal is to produce something that is not JR-specific but is instead able to run on top of any JCR implementation.  For the initial discussion on the JR mailing list, see http://www.nabble.com/jcr-cmis-sandbox-td20609043.html

We should consider reusing such a component rather than inventing our own.  At least for now, as there are other higher priorities for us, we have the time to watch this sandbox project to see how it proceeds.
