Thanks for the great feedback!  I'll try to re-work the patch accordingly and put it back up in a few days.  

I like the idea of giving the lock its own UUID rather than reusing the node's UUID.  That would give us a somewhat shorter path to supporting locking of non-referenceable nodes, although there would still be a whole lot of work to do if we wanted to go that route.
