There are a number of locations in the message that are being used to store the contents of the message.  This is often confusing for new (and experienced) users when specifying the esb configuration and needs consolidating.

Ideally all accesses (read/write) should be made to the same location with actions/gateways having the ability to override this through configuration.

The current mechanism needs to be supported (perhaps via a configuration option) so that existing code doesn't break.
