Great that you found the issue and thanks for reporting back. I have created [JBIDE-18602] Warn the user if not JDK1.7+ is used when trying to start Forge - JBoss Issue Tracker (https://issues.jboss.org/browse/JBIDE-18602) so the user gets informed in a better way in the future.
