Allowing null groupIds doesn't solve the issue. Liferay's producer fails with an NPE:

        at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:597)

At this point, I'm closing this issue because I believe this is an implementation issue in Liferay's WSRP implementation and/or configuration.
