I was able to register GateIn as producer after commenting out handlers as you described. I also see the list of remote portlets, but after adding portlets on page in LR, there is a error with locales (I've tried in FF and chrome) - see attached log.
I've tried with this one liferay-portal-jboss-6.0.6-20110225.zip , I wasn't able to start latest 6.1.0-ce-b4 (tomcat,jboss).
Matt, there is a trick to see remote portlets on LR. After creating consumer, you must Edit registration -> Save and then there is Manage portlets option on consumer. Then you add remote portlet in that menu, go to some page, Add -> Portlet (More) -> WSRP
