Hi David,
   welcome to JBoss community. Start looking over the projects at JBoss 
community.  Try to follow a few of them. Choose the one you like and 
then we can get you set up to do contributions.

Ideally, we like our students to go beyond GSOC and be active as an open 
source contributor. :)
