The aim is still to try to use Cassandra as the persistence mechanism, but you are correct, this is not related to that.
I think the quantity of information being collected by APM is useful over a certain timeframe, where users want to investigate current application performance and take relevant actions. But only a subset of the information will be of interest for longer term analyais - and this is where H-Metrics could be useful, with its ability to aggregate and compression metrics over a long period of time.
