This bug is basically solved. Steve, check SVN 10236 and 10237 and close it.
This is mainly useful for EJB 3 since PERSIST_ON_FLUSH is the operation cascaded on a flush operation and it allows NoCascade.
Still I think this bug can be reproduced on the regular hibernate core operations
