Hi,
I just found out that there is a small bug in the example persistence.xml file for a Typical Java SE environment in Chapter 2.2.2 Bootstrapping:

The xml file is as follows:

   <persistence-unit name="manager1" transaction-type="RESOURCE_LOCAL">
      <class>org.hibernate.ejb.test.Cat</class>
      <class>org.hibernate.ejb.test.Distributor</class>
      <class>org.hibernate.ejb.test.Item</class>
      <properties>
         <property name="hibernate.dialect" value="org.hibernate.dialect.HSQLDialect"/>
         <property name="hibernate.connection.driver_class" value="org.hsqldb.jdbcDriver"/>
         <property name="hibernate.connection.username" value="sa"/>
         <property name="hibernate.connection.password" value=""/>
         <property name="hibernate.connection.url" value="jdbc:hsqldb:."/>
         <property name="hibernate.max_fetch_depth" value="3"/>

The error is that the <persistence-unit> is not being closed by </persistence-unit> (look two lines up from here) ...

The documentation says:
...
<persistence-unit>
....
<persistence-unit>  <---- this must me </persistence-unit>
</persistence>
