I have now found that the reason this works fine using INNER_JOIN is that the methods org.hibernate.loader.JoinWalker.initPersisters() and countCollectionPersisters() (the latter being called from the former) only take LEFT_OUTER_JOINs into account.

Why this is so, and how to change this to fix the problem, I have yet to understand.
