This limitation/bug is very dissapointing. I understand this it's a difficult problem to solve but I wish the Hibernate team was a lot more open about the kind of things you can and can't do with the criteria API in the documentation. I will have to undo a great deal of work and go back to SQL generation after discovering this limitation.
