I got this same exception here.... man, its a very ugly workaround... :(

ive setted 0 to all version like this:

UPDATE table
    SET version=0
    WHERE version is null
GO

and now all is fine;

Please Hibernate Developers, make org.hibernate.type.IntegerType.next  be nullSafe.
