Wow, I can't believe this issue has been open for over 2 years!  I'm using EJB 3 with result set mapping to a text field and am getting the same error.  I'm using MySQL5InnoDBDialect with MySQL Driver 5.0.8, so this dialect does not solve the problem as stated above.

Is there any way we can get the priority jumped up on this one.  Not being able to retrieve a text column is a pretty big deal (in fact is a blocker for us).
