Francois, do you have some kind of profiler screeshot showing where the reference is stuck?
Is it really from the TL stored in ContextHolder?
Before doing the cleanup I am describing in http://opensource.atlassian.com/projects/hibernate/browse/HSEARCH-314?focusedCommentId=32576#action_32576 I would like to be sure.
