The patch is not solving the root problem.
identification variables in update statements are legal as per the JPA spec. 
The proper fix is to generate a SQL that "removes" the identification variable for PostgreSQL (probably triggered by a Dialect flag).
Let's open a Hibernate Core JIRA for it and see what Steve has to say.

In the mean time, let's treat that as a limitation of PostgreSQL and a known failing test.
