Workaround found, briefly described in the above thread.  If there was a way to get at the sql-insert value from a Generator class (via a Persister or SessionImplementor, I guess?), then the configurable generator that I suggest in my workaround wouldn't be needed, and the workaround would be good enough for me to submit as a new (and reasonably useful) generator.
