One more option - which is the one I actually implemented - is to implement a dirty bit on the application so that it is aware of modifications that should cause reindexing. It was a bit of work but I think this works best and has the best performance.
What might be helpful is that fieldbridge has an additional method called isDrity and then I would have had to implement it from the begining and take care of it rather than discover it afterwards.
