for consistency reasons. 
However, the bigger issue is the wrong configuration of http://repository.jboss.com/maven2
This said, the new JBoss maven repo - https://repository.jboss.org/nexus/content/repositories/public/ - is configured properly and sets the right content type. http://repository.jboss.com/maven2 will soon be decommissioned.
