right this is not blocked by the upgrade to 3.0: originally there wasn't a plan for an intermediate release using Lucene 2.9, we wanted to upgrade to 3 right away, unfortunately that wasn't possible.

about NumericFields, yes if you can have the type inferred from the property/field that would be great.
About Spatial, that could be a first implementation, but I assume that it should be possible to customise the prefixes differently for each field? Maybe not a great feature, but stresses that there might be other changes needed in future to support more differences about Field/NumericField/SpatialFields..
