You are correct. The Hibernate Derby Dialect (at least in 3.5.6.Final) doesn't support the boolean data type.

The first steps in adding support is to extend the current DerbyDialect and implement a new constructor:

public DerbyDialect() {
    super();
    registerColumnType( Types.BIT, "boolean" );
}
{code}

I haven't tested any further than this though. You can then use: {{true}} and {{false}} in your insert scripts.
