I got that error in this specific version: Adaptive Server Enterprise/15.5/EBF 18160 SMP ESD#2. Tested with JDBC connection, Sybase central and isql shell. I got the same problem with those three different client environments. 

By the way, please make sure this bug was not fixed in https://hibernate.onjira.com/browse/HHH-5598.
