As it seems this is [this compiler bug|http://bugs.sun.com/view_bug.do?bug_id=6512707]. Good news is that this will be fixed in JDK 7 ;-) Even better news is that you can work around the problem by prefixing the enum's default value with its package:

    SomeEnum somEnum() default test.SomeEnum.VALUE1;
