Yes I'm aware Hibernate required some changes - that's the point of us having changed the mayor release number.

With my statement I meant to specifically address the APIs, as you mentioned them: generally standard APIs when updated include the same interfaces as before, plus some new extensions. So we develop against the older API, unless there is a functional need to support new features (for example, it's using now JPA2 not JPA).

You're very welcome to use newer versions of any JMS implementation (for example) to take advantage of the benefits you mentioned.

xml-apis is another transitive dependency we don't use nor control directly.

Any other jar you want to suggest updates for?
