[~karlvr] like Mircea said, we only needed {{putForExternalRead}} in the context of Hibernate 2LC, and there it was enough to set the lifespan or maxIdle to the same values for all the entries in the cache. We're a bit reluctant to add more methods to the Cache interface, can you add some more details on why that won't work for you?
