Sure it can. If it does Tx.getStatus() or it gets an exception it will know. It's call to commit() will never succeed. So it certainly knows. Now granted I could see the argument that a custom JPA provider needs this close call.

Yeah the transaction association interceptor can simply call close after checking the status.
