when I add 
	<view-handler>com.sun.facelets.FaceletViewHandler</view-handler> 

back into the faces-config.xml the webapp works again. This line is requried according to the facelets docs. It disappeared between 1.5 and 1.6. Although I cannot imagine this is the real cause.
