I took a look at creating a jboss-vfs.jar version for 4.2 that is based off of the 1.0.x jboss-common.jar. This can be done. The only thing missing from the current 1.0.3.GA jboss-common.jar are changes to the org.jboss.util.file.ArchiveBrowser. These can be backported to jboss-common for a 1.0.4.GA release. 

I'm going to create a Branch_1_0 under https://svn.jboss.org/repos/jbossas/projects/vfs/branches for this. This can be integrated as a server/xxx/lib jar rather than a bootstrap jar I believe.
