You will have to use both (Apache for http requests and JBoss/Tomcat for servlet requets). This page will get you started if you are using Jboss AS (which uses Tomcat)

I have only used mod_jk in the past, but there are other options listed on the wiki. Basically, you should start with getting your modjk settings working before you deploy JBoss Portal.
