Isn't preferredMaster static and should be defined at jboss startup time. Is there something like that in Jboss 4.2. Also, is there any other way or mechanism that can be developed to dynamically tell service to run on Node D (New node). Note: This service depends on Barrier.

I am also curious to know if xml descriptor file that defines the Barrier/election ploicy etc. is read dynamically or is it just at startup time?
