BTW the  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_Response_Measurement ARM Spec might be interesting for this; its an old open standard for defining how to add breadcrumbs to messages/logs/events to help diagnose complex systems. I remember a while back some folks started implementing it at codehaus in the  http://svn.codehaus.org/livetribe/ livetribe project but it didn't seem to go anywhere  :(  though at least it  https://github.com/livetribe/ moved to github
