Embedded is undergoing an overhaul at the moment, @see this Thread:

Most recently we've been bringing Application Server into a new 
bootstrap component from which the embedded launcher may extend.  This 
month we're seeing some prototypes, but I still need to align these with 
trunk.

If you're interested in being part of the development, I've got a few 
JIRA tasks in line. :)
