It turns out that the problem was that each SpringRMIPerformanceClient was creating a callback server and registering it under the name "SpringRMICallbackServerService".  The server then connected to whichever callback server happened to be registered at the time.  Some callback servers were getting multiple messages, and others were getting none and hanging.  The solution was to create the callback servers programmatically and register each under a different name, specifically, "SpringRMICallbackServerService" + sessionId.
