Maybe you need to go into the 7-character acromym space to still find something useful in the workflow/BPM space ;-)

As for the problem at hand. Isn't it possible to do use the XmlAdapter.initialze(SemanticElement) method to override the (default) values that were set in the SemanticElement.initialize() method by the values that are specified in the xml? This method was created for this purpose in any case.
