OK, found the reason: when -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true, mcast_addr of 228.8.8.8 is correct. However, when we use IPv6, then the mcast_addr of 228.8.8.8 cannot be used; and we need to define a different, IPv6 compatible multicast address !
