If as part of this you want to shift to canonical version shorts, http://fisheye.jboss.com/browse/JBoss/JBossCache/src/org/jboss/cache/Version.java?r1=1.7&r2=1.8 shows the change we made in JBC to accomplish this.  http://www.jboss.com/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&t=77231 is the forum thread that describes where this algorithm came from.
