User Portlet allows registration for already existing email id's

I assume the user portlet does'nt allow registrations with an email id which already exists in the database as when i try to register a new user with an existing email, I see no records are inserted in the jbp_users table.

But the user portlet does not tell me that the email id already exists and returns to the main page which makes me assume that registration is complete.
