Version history loads up ALL the history, and then sorts it via version number (so the true order is preserved). This is not needed, can convert restore to copy content only, and then check it in as a new version (ie not use JCR restore) - means can just use predecessor node and lazy iteration. 

Downside: no JCR visibility of restored, but really, who cares.
