Assigning to Emanuel who leads the identity portlets.

The initial idea was to easily adapt the register JSF to add stuff there. Your use case is to add *all* the profile components in the registration page.

Actually the ideas for the future was to build the pages dynamically based on the descriptor where we could say if a component should be on the profile page only or in both.
