An issue similar to the (reported fixed) bug regarding preferences - http://jira.jboss.org/jira/browse/JBPORTAL-1666. If you deploy with portlet-instances.xml set to give an instance a role (using if-exists overwrite) and then later redeploy with a different role (or by deleting that role), the change does not take affect. Even after restartin Jboss, no affect. Must actually "Delete" the instance from the admin console and redeploy before the change takes affect.
