Some smart guy decided to name the following constants with the same name, but completely different semantics:

Long:
static long 	MIN_VALUE
          A constant holding the minimum value a long can have, -2^63.

Double:
static double 	MIN_VALUE
          A constant holding the smallest POSITIVE nonzero value of type double, 2^-1074.

Sure enough, I was using Double.MIN_VALUE thinking it was the smalles NEGATIVE number, the same way as Long.MIN_VALUE, and that screwed the max function implementation.
