The problem seems to be that the client jar was originally written for EJB3. After adding a few classes, I got the plain ejb 3 tests from the TCK working locally. But anything involving jboss messaging fails requiring more classes. This is because jboss messaging on the client has its own AspectManager into which it deploys an -aop.xml that it downloads from the server, meaning that most of the aop classes are in fact being used.
