Please refer back to the forum thread.   The problem was due to a symbolic link.   My jboss/server directory was a symlink to another directory.

It is quite important to have server files spread across multiple paritions  (get the log to hit /var/log, keep the server files in /var/www, keep jboss home in /opt/jboss.)

Hopefully this bug can be corrected, or an alternative approach can be devised.
