JBM components requires a data directory (to store bindings, journal logs, pages, etc.)

The path to these directories is relative to the user.dir (i.e. the dir where the JVM is launched) unless configured as absolute path in jbm-configuration.xml.

For JBoss AS 5 integration, we must ensure that the data dir is created inside the jbm2_default profile directory (the same location used by JBoss Transaction, HSQLDB, etc).
