I recently upgraded from JBoss 4.2.2 to 5.1 and the memory usage of our application increased dramatically. I found that upgrading the JDK from 1.6.0_10 to 1.6.0_16 cut the memory usage in half.

JDK 1.6.0_10 & JBoss 4.2.2 = 300-400 Mb

JDK 1.6.0_10 & JBoss 5.1 = 800-900 Mb

JDK 1.6.0_16 & JBoss 5.1 = 400-500 Mb
