I know the GPD is GEF, not GMF but http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/rsmhelp/v7r0m0/index.jsp?topic=/org.eclipse.gmf.doc/tutorials/diagram/createConnection.html is what is 'needed' for a much better user experience. Maybe time for a change ;-)
