The issue JGRP-956 has now been cleared up and was the result of an incorrect setting for java.net.preferIPv4Stack. See the JIRA issue for more details.
The updates to the issue also confirm that:
(i) binding to multicast sockets is possible in IPv6
(ii) when we do bind to miulticast, the crosstalk problem does not appear as in IPv4
