If that's all what you're doing ("I am deploying by copying a single EAR into the deploy/ dir") you should be fine.
So it looks like we missed something. :-(

Can we move this discussion to the JBoss5 forum?
Post more details there, or if you could somehow debug (log) on why it's not able to find an existing cached deployable.
