Currently the repository handles all requests over https.  The performance of the repository could be improved by only sending authentication requests over https, and other requests over standard http.  The configuration should be similar to that of the Apache repository (https://docs.sonatype.org/display/Repository/Repository.Zones.Apache.Org+setup)
