Reaches OOME on my linux box with jgroups 2.11ga still, but not on my macbook pro (excessive swapping artificially throttled everything in the system).  I set max heap to 777m for leader & followers, 32bit jvm.  I'll pull from your git & rebuild if you think that might help.  I can attach an hprof or log too.

Just so we're on the same page I'll reattach my current project.
